Glasgow Rangers have been linked with a winter move to bring attacker Josh Windass back to Ibrox in the upcoming January transfer window.
The Light Blues have reportedly had an approach to sign him on loan from Championship side Wrexham turned down, as they explore a possible deal to reunite him with Danny Rohl, shortly after Stig Inge Bjornebye was appointed as their new football consultant.
Windass scored 13 goals for the German head coach in the league last season, per Sofascore, and the Gers are hoping to snap him up to bolster their squad for the second half of the season.
Why Rangers should bring Josh Windass back to Ibrox
If the Bjornebye and the owners can convince Wrexham to part ways with the 31-year-old star on a short-term deal next month, the attacking midfielder would be a strong addition to the side.
Windass, as shown in the graphic above, enjoyed a fairly productive spell in a difficult era at Ibrox previously, but it is in England where he has really found his feet in front of goal.
Since the start of last season, the English attacker has scored 19 goals and provided eight assists in the Championship, per Sofascore, for Sheffield Wednesday and Wrexham combined.
The versatile forward, who can play as a number ten, out wide, or as a striker, has already shown that he can be effective in Rohl’s system, having thrived under him with 13 league goals for the Owls last term.
His six-goal haul for Wrexham in the current campaign is also two more than any Rangers player has produced in the Scottish Premiership this season, per WhoScored, which suggests that he would bring a much-needed goal threat to Ibrox.

Should Bjornebye get a deal over the line for Windass in the coming days or weeks, there is a current Rangers player who should never start again.
The flop whose Rangers career could be ended by Josh Windass
Brazilian centre-forward Danilo looked on course to be a key player for Rohl after he scored two goals in the manager’s first three games with the Ibrox giants, scoring in both of his first two league outings for the German.
The 26-year-old attacker, who was signed from Feyenoord for £6m in 2023, has failed to provide a goal or an assist for the Light Blues in the subsequent ten matches, though, which shows that he has failed to build on his early form for Rohl.
Danilo has been deployed out wide on the left and as a shadow striker behind another centre-forward, like Youssef Chermiti and Bojan Miovski, which are the kind of roles that Windass, whose natural position is as a shadow striker, would be perfect for at Ibrox.
The Brazilian flop, who was once described as being “sloppy” on the ball by pundit Steven Thompson, has only started one of the last five league games, and his struggles to start would only get worse if Windass comes through the door next month.
Their respective performances at league level in the 2025/26 campaign suggest that the English attacker would be a much better option to start, in any position, than Danilo.

As you can see in the table above, Windass has the quality to offer more to the team as both a scorer and a creator of goals in the attacking midfield or wide positions for Rangers.

That means that signing the Englishman on loan could prevent Danilo from getting any starts, because he is already struggling for starts, and it would add another player between him and the starting line-up.
On top of that, signing Windass could also force Danilo to reassess his future at Ibrox, as he could have the likes of Miovski, Chermiti, Windass, and Thelo Aasgaard either ahead of him or providing competition for his place.

Rangers have made an enquiry over a possible deal to sign a star who would be a big upgrade on Thelo Aasgaard.

After more than two years with the Gers, the £6m flop could call time on his spell in Glasgow and be forced to look elsewhere for game time, due to the lack of starts that could come with this potential signing.
